What are the advantages of the new training?
Uniform nursing training is a big plus for you. In future you will be significantly broader and trained for all nursing fields. You can ensure nursing care regardless of the age of your patients – i.e. look after children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. This gives you better chances on the job market.

Generalist nursing training is also international : the new vocational qualification is designed to meet EU requirements and is therefore recognized across Europe . This makes it much easier for you to work outside of Germany after completing your training.

Like previous courses, the training is divided into theoretical lessons and practical modules. At least 2,100 hours of theory and 2,500 hours of practice are provided. In addition, 10 percent of the practical training period is prescribed as practical instructions. After the first two years there is an intermediate school examination.
This does not have to be passed in order to continue the training. At this point in some federal states it is possible to switch to a shorter training course as a nursing assistant.

Anyone who continues the generalist training course completes the training as a nurse. In the other two cases, schoolchildren acquire the already recognized qualifications for child nurses or geriatric nurses. Of course, the two specializations do not exclude later work in another nursing area. Trainees can make a decision at the earliest six months before the start of the last third of the training. At this point you have become familiar with all nursing areas and can choose the option that suits your own interests and suitability.

What are the reasons for generalization in nursing?
A reform of the nursing professions was necessary to ensure that new nursing staff was trained in a modern way. Generalists who are able to interdisciplinarily combine their know-how and their practical skills from the individual care areas are currently in demand. And this is exactly what extensive training teaches.

Generalization opens up a wide range of job prospects for young professionals and makes the care profile more attractive. What are the goals of nursing reform and general nursing education?
Generalist nursing training is regulated by the Nursing Professional Reform Act. This was passed in June 2017 with the approval of the Federal Council.
The aim of the reform is to give young people a comprehensive understanding of nursing work. The trainees learn to quickly familiarize themselves with different fields of activity and to take on special tasks just as quickly. Future nurses are particularly flexible and can be used in all care areas.
What is changing for trainees and graduates from the previous nursing professions?
For many trainees and graduates of traditional nursing professions, the question is what will change for them from 2020. The good news: The previous nursing professions remain valid. Anyone who has completed training according to the old system is still allowed to work in their profession and does not have to complete generalist training retrospectively. The same applies to pupils who want to complete an old course starting at the end of 2019. A recently started geriatric care training, for example, is still being completed according to old law. In individual cases it is also possible to switch to general nursing training.
When is an application for generalist nursing training possible?
The prerequisite for generalist nursing training is at least a middle school leaving certificate. It is also possible to start with a secondary school diploma and after successful training as a nursing assistant. In this case, there is even a credit for the training period.
What funding options are there for general nursing training?
School fees for nursing training still valid in many countries will be abolished in 2020 . Instead, general nursing training will be free of charge for all trainees . Schoolchildren also receive attractive training allowances. Financing is ensured through a compensation fund and a special pay-as-you-go system. Hospitals, care facilities and the state pay equally into long-term care insurance. The nursing schools receive a proportion of the training costs from the pot. There is also no cap on the number of apprentices – so there is no restriction on how many apprentices there may be.
